The Boston Principal Fellowship (BPF) is an innovative program to prepare Boston’s next generation of school leaders (principals and assistant principals). The curriculum is centered on Boston’s Seven Essentials of Whole School Improvement, a framework that is nationally recognized for its results. Focusing intensely on the importance of principals deeply understanding instruction and organizing the entire school enterprise on improving student learning, BPF develops the leadership and management skills this work requires.

An intensive 12-month experience that integrates theory and practice, BPF offers:

  • A full-year, four-day-per-week residency with one of Boston’s strongest principals that offers the opportunity to apply course learning in a school setting and to complete authentic tasks that meet real school needs.
  • Ninety days of seminars and course work that explore Boston’s Six Essentials of Whole School Improvement and the implications for school leadership, management and operations.
  • Teaching provided by principals, assistant principals, central office staff, higher education faculty and community leaders
  • A stipend for Principal Fellows during their participation in this program, in return for a three-year commitment to the Boston Public Schools after completing the program.
  • Massachusetts Initial Principal/Assistant Principal License upon successful completion of BPF.
  • Optional Master’s degree.
  • Consideration for principalships and assistant principalships in Boston for successful Principal Fellows.
  • Membership in a cohort that will serve as a professional network throughout the individual's administrative career in Boston.
