Dimensions of Principal Leadership

The Boston Principal Fellowship is designed to prepare school leaders who have a clear vision for excellence in urban education and the passion and skills to work with students, faculty, parents and the community to realize the vision. The program is organized on ten Dimensions of Principal Leadership, which define the skills required of effective school leaders and guide Fellows' work in schools.

Listed below are the ten Dimensions of Principal Leadership. Combined, they reflect the areas of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that effective school leaders should possess.

  1. Understanding and Managing Self
  2. Resilience
  3. School Culture and Climate
  4. Learning and Teaching
  5. Supervision and Evaluation
  6. Data
  7. Professional Development
  8. Shared Leadership
  9. Resources
  10. Family and Community Engagement

At the beginning of the year fellows use a rubric to measure their expertise and learning needs relative to each leadership dimension. Fellows develop and implement a learning contract to ensure growth in prioritized areas during the fellowship year. Over the course of the year, fellows reflect regularly on their progress toward meeting the standard in each dimension.
